Play Therapy
Play therapy is probably best explained by the words of Gary L. Landreth who said that 'toys are children's words and play is their language'.
As a Social Worker and Play Therapist, I understand that children between the ages of 2-10 years do not have the language skills that are needed for them to be able to sit down and talk about what is going on for them and this is why Play Therapy is so important.
Child-Centred Play Therapy is a non-directive therapeutic intervention that can help children to process trauma. It supports children to better manage those big emotions that sometimes lead to behaviours that can be challenging for parents, family members, carers, and teachers.
Our Play Therapy is research supported, attachment informed, and developmentally based. It is my goal to help children to express themselves in a safe and supportive environment that allows the child’s innate wisdom to guide their healing and growth journey, no matter what challenges they are facing.
As discussed by Fred Rogers, "Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children, play is serious learning". Play Therapy sessions are conducted in our workspaces, or the child’s school, all year round.
At Peaceful Paddocks Wellness Services, we work in a collaborative way and so I will work with you, your child, or anyone who you wish to be involved in your child’s therapeutic journey. You, and your supporters, will be invited to attend a 45-minute consultation with me during which we will discuss your child’s needs, your goals, and our program. Children do not attend this session, and I will guide you to the best way you can support your child to positively participate in their Play Therapy Sessions.
During your child’s first Play Therapy session, they will be invited to explore the Play Therapy Room and you are welcome to support them with this. This will set your child up to feel comfortable to enjoy a positive environment, where they can feel safe, happy, and confident, to express themselves which will help them to achieve their therapeutic goals.
